Where Are They Now?

Greg Yeomans, 1993-95

Golf, Men's Basketball

Not often does an athlete have a chance to play two sports at an NCAA Division I level.  With his remarkable skills in golf, and his passion for basketball, Greg Yeomans went from an all-star golf player in high school to also a valuable walk-on basketball player for UConn in his senior year.

Although a career in basketball was not an option for Yeomans after graduating, he pursued golf and is today happily working as the head golf pro at The Bay Club in Mattapoisett, Mass.

Yeomans, who grew up with golf, would play during summer months in Cape Cod while visiting his grandparents along with working at a golf club in high school.

He graduated from Ledyard High School in 1990 and began golfing for Assumption College. He tried out for the basketball team, but got cut from the squad.

He left Assumpton and took a year off from school and worked on his golf skills in Florida. Although Yeomans was not settled in college at this age, he was not worried.

“I knew what my bigger plan was,” said Yeomans.  “And that was golf.”

Yeomans came to UConn in 1993 and had an outstanding career as a golf student-athlete.  During his three years playing for the Huskies, he was a three-time captain, the 1994 Most Outstanding Golfer in New England, a 1994 NCAA All-New England Golf team choice and had a 75.75 average through 38 tournaments and 75 rounds.  Along with his personal achievements, he helped UConn win their first BIG EAST Conference Championship in 1994.

While playing in a pickup game of basketball during his senior year , Yeomans was noticed by an assistant coach of the women’s basketball team. He was asked to help out during their practice and eventually was recruited to walk-on to the men’s basketball team.

As a Husky basketball player, Yeomans saw action in 17 games for the 1994-95 BIG EAST Regular Season Champions.

“Basketball is my true love, even though golf is important to me,” said Yeomans.  “I love playing as a team verse single-man sports.”

After college, Yeomans continued working at golf clubs, including Sterling Farms in Stamford, where he was an assistant, and Stanley Golf Course in New Britain, where he was a head pro.

Currently, he is the head pro at The Bay Club and is in his fourth year. Here he takes charge of operations such as checking in members and guests, teaching lessons, and budgeting and financing.

“I am comfortable being a club professional here verse ever becoming a tour professional,” said Yeomans.  “I would love to end my career here and retire in about 25 years.”

Greg Yeomans currently resides in Marion, Mass. with his wife Ann and his three children Jacob (7), Cassidy (4), and Braden (20 months).
