Huskies Come Close to a Sweep of Drexel
COVENTRY, CT (April 10) -- The University of Connecticut's rowing team won
three out of four races this morning on Coventry Lake. Once again, the junior
varsity 8 put together a solid race to defeat Drexel. Stroke Alison Elmo led
the charge off the line to give the junior varsity 8 a length lead by the 500
meter mark.
UConn's varsity 8 jumped out to a 3 seat lead off the starting line. Drexel
fought back and both boats fought stroke for stroke to the last 500 meters.
Drexel made a small move in the last 500 meters to beat finish ahead of UConn
by only 1.9 seconds.
After a shaky start, the novice 8 regrouped and beat Drexel by 30.5 seconds.
The engine room of Brooke Bierdman, Nicole Rapp, Bethany Caron and Erin
Anderson powered the novice 8 down the course. The second novice 8 was able to
hang on to Drexel for the first 1000 meters but Drexel extended its lead over
the last half of the race.
The varsity 4 finished the morning's races with another victory. Samantha
Bond steered the Huskies down the course to finish 24.3 seconds ahead of the
Dragons.
Next weekend the rowers travel to Philadelphia to compete in the Knect Cup
Regatta.
