UConn Rowing Competes In Knecht Cup

COOPER RIVER, N.J. (April 17) -- The University of Connecticut junior varsity eight boat finished fourth in the grand final at the Knecht Cup over the weekend to highlight the Huskies performance.

UConn had a total of four boats in the two-day competition. The junior varsity eight finished in a time of 7:08.7 in the final while Boston College won the event in 6:59.2. This was the best finish for a UConn junior varsity eight in the five years that this event has taken place. The junior varsity boat consisted of Liz Glomb, Erin ANdersen, Valerie Voorhees, Katie Devonshuk, Jodi Hope, Kali Garges, Heather Ferrick, Jenn Rogers and Kerri Mocko.

The UConn novice eight was fifth in the grand final in a time of 7:32.1. Princeton won that event in 6:58.2 after the Huskies had edged Princeton out in the semifinals on Saturday. Again, the fifth place finish was the best for a UConn novice eight in the history of the event. The novice eight consisted of Katie Beasley, Monica Parker, Kim Raetz, Whitney Peterson, Caitlin Meisinger, Kate Jureller, Kelly McGary, Arielle Shiely and Allyson Zoppa.

The varsity eight finished sixth in the third level final in a time of 7:14.1 while Colgate won in 6:57.7. The varsity eight struggled in each race, unable to find any rhythm. The Huskies made the semifinals Saturday afternoon, which secured a spot in the top 18 for Sunday, finishing fourth in the heat but squeaking through to the semifinals. The varsity eight this weekend was Abbey Off, Alison Elmo, Tina Spagnoli, Brooke Grauer, Nicole Rapp, Christina Cotter, Stephanie Chivers, Erin Bartie and Ursula Henwood.

The UConn varsity four was third in the petite final in 8:16.0 while Georgetown won that race in 7:58.5. This was the same exact finish for UConn as the Huskies had last year in the event.

The novice four heats had trouble lining up at the starting line because of the strong crosswind, so the race went to a floating start which threw out the option to advance with the next three fastest times. The Huskies were just edged out of third place and did not advance out of the heat. The novice four lineup consisted of Lauren Chan, Caitlin Champ, Kara Forman, Lauren Colello and Katie Dobbins.
