of Connecticut women's soccer team recorded a 1-1 tie against Maryland Thursday
night. They then played two overtime periods with reserves where freshman
forward Cory Bildstein (Stockton, N.J.) scored 29 seconds
into the second overtime. UConn iis 1-0-1 in the preseason while the Terrapins
are also 1-0-1. The Huskies created several scoring opportunities
throughout the game, but were unable to take advantage and fell behind 1-0 after
Maryland scored off a corner kick late in the first half. UConn trailed at the
half despite out shooting the Terrapins 8-4. The score remained the same until
the last minute of the game when junior midfielders Brittany Taylor
(Campbell Hill, N.Y.) and Jessica Diakun (Waterbury, Conn.) created
turnovers, leading the ball to the feet of freshman Erin Clark (Somers,
Conn.) who sent it across the goal where senior Meghan Schnur
(Butler, Pa.) was waiting to send it to the back of the net. After agreeing to
end the game after 90 minutes, the teams decided to play two 10 minute overtime
halves playing
mostly reserves. After a scoreless first 10 minutes,
freshman Elise Fugowski (Stockholm, N.J.) split two defenders and sent a
pass to Bildstein 16 yards from the goal. The Maryland keeper challenged, and
Bildstein sent it low into the far post for the game winner. The Huskies
conclude their exhibition season this Sunday with a game at Virginia at 2:00 pm. |
