Ron Dubois is in his fifth season as the men’s golf coach at
Connecticut after a long career of service both to the UConn Division of
Athletics and to the United States of America. UConn is in the midst of a
resurgence under Dubois’ direction, capturing tournament championships in three
of his four seasons, including the 2004 New England Fall Championship. It was
the Huskies’ first fall New England crown since 1982. Seven different Husky
individuals have earned medalist honors in five seasons under Dubois.
A native of Providence, Dubois graduated from Providence
College and later added an MBA from Siena College. After graduating from
Providence, Dubois immediately started a 28-year career in the U.S. Army. His
military service spanned the globe and earned him the rank of Colonel. He
commanded battalion sized units, and although a career field artillery officer,
he earned a combat infantry badge in Vietnam amongst other combat awards. Dubois
also served two tours of duty each at the Pentagon and in the former West
Germany. For his final tour, Dubois came to Storrs to administer the U.S. Army
ROTC Program for the state of Connecticut.
After retiring from the Army in 1982, Dubois (called Colonel
by his colleagues) joined the UConn athletics staff and has remained a fixture
ever since. Dubois launched his involvement with the UConn Division of Athletics
in 1978, serving as an assistant men’s ice hockey coach for the Huskies from
1978-85. From 1984-87, he was Associate Director of the UConn Athletic
Development Fund. During the 1987-88 academic year, Dubois was Assistant AD for
Facilities and Finance. From 1988 until his appointment in the summer of 2002 as
head men’s golf coach, Dubois served as Associate Director of Athletics for
Operations and Facilities. In that role, Dubois was the day-to-day liaison on
all athletic facility improvement projects that have taken place during the past
15 years. Included in those projects were the initial construction of the Harry
A. Gampel Pavilion, construction of both the George J. Sherman Family Sports
Complex and the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum, renovations to J.O. Christian
Field (baseball) and Morrone Stadium (soccer), and renovations and remodeling of
the Hugh S. Greer Field House, Guyer Gym and Brundage Pool.
"The Colonel is a great person to guide our golf program,"
Director of Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway says. "He’s an exemplary role model for
the student-athletes and his coaching skill was evident this past fall with the
great strides made by our golfers. Plus, I know he’s not only molding better
golfers but better people and for that, I’m proud to have him in this position."
In addition to his involvement in ice hockey as a coach and
official, both on and off of the ice, golf has been Dubois’ primary athletic
activity for many years. His goal as the Huskies coach is to help the UConn golf
program achieve the high standards of the University of Connecticut’s athletic
successes and national prominence.
Dubois and his wife, Dee, reside in Mansfield.
